Refurbishment of a jack-up rig for drilling up to 6000 m

Prior to its Class Renewal Crosco Integrated Drilling and Well Services Co., Ltd. carried out the refurbishment of its jack-up drilling rig Labin. During the refurbishment HELB Ltd. participated in all major works on the electrical and instrumentation part of the rig. Labin is a 70×80 m floating barge fitted with 136m long support legs, with a crew of 50 men and it is used for drilling up to a maximum depth of 6000 m. Before the refurbishment the rig was situated in the Adriatic Sea, halfway between Pula and Ravenna, and the refurbishment was done in the biggest Croatian shipyard Uljanik.

HELB participated in a dozen of significant electrical and instrumentation projects which included inspection of the existing state, providing solution suggestions, design of the project documentation, production of the equipment in HELB’s workshop, installation of the equipment on the rig and testing and commissioning, each performed according to Crosco’s specific requirements.

HELB carried out several projects, such as the driller’s intercom, the refurbishment and upgrade of the existing fire alarm system, the refurbishment of the fire pump system – power supply and control, the upgrade of the air-cooled heat exchanger for the main engine generator sets – power supply and control, the upgrade of the photovoltaic obstruction lighting system and the most demanding project – the replacement of the entire MCC system.

The refurbishment lasted from October 2014 until May 2015 with continuous engagement of a team of ten working in extremely difficult conditions. At the same time when the electrical works were being performed, the locksmith and welding works were also in progress, but thanks to the experience and great coordination all deadlines and safety requirements were successfully met.
